Holy Week is the climatic conclusion to Lent. The week begins with Palm Sunday when we remember Jesus triumphant entry into the Holy City of Jerusalem while riding on a donkey. He was welcomed by people waving Palm Branches in their hands and shouting “Hosanna!”
On Maundy Thursday we celebrate the Lord’s Supper which Jesus instituted as he shared his last Passover with his disciples before he would be arrested, put on trial, and crucified. During this meal, Jesus gave a new command to his disciples that they must love as Jesus had loved them.
Good Friday recounts in an emotional experience the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. We contemplate the meaning of his final words on the cross. It is a night of sorrow and repentance. The worship center is filled with darkness as we remember the darkness of our sin which was the reason Jesus died on the cross. But we call it good because we know that through Jesus death, he offers forgiveness.
Easter Sunday turns our sorrow into joy as we celebrate that Jesus is alive. Death is not the end. He has won the victory! There is hope even in the darkest moments.
